WTA Miami Open 2021: Andreescu vs. Barty

I've been busy with other matters this week so I haven't been able to keep up much with the WTA Miami Open: the last time I had hours to watch the matches was Sunday (finally available legally in Canada on TSN2). For a brief period they cut to the ATP matches where Russia's Daniil Medvedev fought through an obvious leg injury to still win in 3 sets his match against Alexei Popyrin.

On that day Ludmilla Samsonova (7/10) was essentially humiliated by pudgy Greek (whatever the opposite of goddess is) Maria Sakkari (4.5/10), Jessica Pegula (6.5/10) sadly squeaked by Karolína Plíšková (8/10), and Nina Stojanović (8.5/10) withdrew from her match and allowed Naomi Osaka (7/10) to advance to the Top 16.

Also on Sunday, Russian cutie Elena Rybakina (7/10) fell to Spain's Sara Sorribes Tormo (5.5/10), Elise Mertens (7.5/10) held on against Anett Kontaveit (8.5/10), and in probably the saddest thing I've ever seen Anna Kalinskaya (9.5/10) won her first set only to lose 6-4,3-6,4-6) to Spain/Venezuela's Garbiñe Muguruza (6/10).

The disappointments continued when not-Bulgaria's Sofia Kenin (8/10) fought hard but was overwhelmed by Tunisia's hottest women: Ons Jabeur (5/10). Fortunately the final match of the night made up for it: Canada's Bianca Andreescu (7.5/10) faced off against America's Amanda Anisimova (9/10) in what Thok Mak described as "the battle of the tits". It was a great matchup, with Andreescu winning the first set tiebreaker 7-4, Anisimova winning the second set tiebreaker 7-2, and then the Canadian winning the final set 6-4.

On Monday Barty (6/10) continued rolling over the competition by eliminating Victoria Azarenka (8/10), Petra Kvitova (6.5/10) fortunately lost to Elina Svitolina (9/10), but that's balanced out by Anastasija Sevastova (5.5/10) beating Croatia's Ana Konjuh (8.5/10). Also in action, Aryna Sabalenka (6.5/10) defeated Marketa Vondrousova (7/10), Mertens lost to Osaka, Sakkari won the third set tiebreaker 8-6 to beat Pegula, Tormo beat Jabeur in a "Battle of the ugly" and Andreescu came back from a first set loss to beat Muguruza.

Tuesday saw Barty won in a close match against Sabalenka, and Svitolina thankfully got rid of Sevastova...but I guess if I missed the matches what difference did it make...Andreescu thankfully eliminated Tormo on Wednesday and Sakkari had a surprise 6-0,64 drubbing of Osaka. Finally, yesterday saw Barty beat Svitolina (wahhhh!!!) and Andreescu won her first set in a 9-7 tiebreaker, lost her second set 3-6, and then a 7-4 tiebreaker win to finally get rid of Sakkari in the third set.

There's no action today, but tomorrow will again see action in the final as Andreescu and Barty will face off. Today's only action is doubles which I hate watching even though the hot-ass potential is doubled. Right away Bethanie Mattek-Sands (7.5/10, speaking of tits!) and Iga Świątek (8/10) are going to face off against the Japanese duo of Shuko Aoyama (4/10) and Ena Shibahara (5.5/10), and later tonight Luisa Stefani (6.5/10) and Hayley Carter (6.5/10) will take on Italy's Giuliana Olmos (6/10) and Canadian Gabriela Dabrowski (6.5/10) in what might as well be called THE BATTLE OF THE OBTAINABLE.

Come to think of it, excepting the fame that comes with singles success, tomorrow's Barty/Andreescu match could be called the "Battle of the Obtainable (if you get them tipsy first and compliment their haircuts)".
